Over the years, I have developed routines and habits to ensure I am staying mentally, physically and spiritually healthy. For me personally, these habits can subdue negative feelings and thoughts. Which in turn, has resulted in a positive mindset and a vibrant contagious energy to keep plunging through whatever life throws my way. Besides, lets be honest this past year has not been a walk in the park for any of us.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting yourself first and sticking to a few things that bring you peace, relaxation and happiness. Being pregnant during a pandemic, I have had to switch a lot of my self-care routines around to keep baby and I safe, but it has been worth it more ways than one! Finding new ways to maintain my routines, I believe, has truly given me generous amounts of sanity through quarantine, crazy hormones and a forever changing body. So, let’s get to it! Below are my top five self-care habits and tips that will hopefully give you ideas to show yourself some overdue love and affection!
1. Gratitude Journal
As I become older and life continues to throw me the most unexpected curve balls, I have learned to try my best to focus on all of my blessings. Taking time daily to write what you are thankful for can revamp your entire mindset. Journaling is a form of expression and release. I have never walked away from my journal feeling worse than I did before I began writing. Give it a shot, trust me you won’t regret it!
2. Fresh Air & Sunshine
The weather is finally breaking and absorbing sunshine and fresh air each day can provide astounding benefits. Taking our pup for walks each day gives us an excuse to get out of the house and indulge in what we tend to take for granted during the warmer months. Start giving yourself a reason to take advantage of these spring and summer days! Step outside and indulge in fresh air and vitamin D; a natural prescription for feeling happier and relaxed.
Anyone who knows me can vouch that I am a huge skincare junkie. I love to try the newest beauty products as I remain faithful to my favorites! Before the pandemic I pampered myself with a microdermabrasion treatment every four weeks. Once covid hit, that ceased very quickly due to my pregnancy. My resolution was to purchase an at home device to keep some consistency in my normal routine! Let me tell you, it’s nowhere near my spa experience but it definitely gets the job done. Skin is the largest organ of the human body, so treat it with a bit of TLC!
Personally, exercising is one of my favorite ways to blow off steam and has aided me through some of the most trying times of my life. Relieving anxiety, moodiness, body aches and stiffness does more for your mental and physical health than you can even imagine. There are countless home-based fitness apps that will provide you with numerous workouts at all levels. Treat your body generously, you only have one in this life!
5. Drink Water
Did you know the adult human body is made of up to 60% of water? The skin alone contains 64% water while the brain and heart are composed of 73% of water. Crazy right? Water is vitally important. I keep track of my intake daily, even more now due to my pregnancy. It significantly affects energy levels and brain function which in turn can affect your entire mood! Bottom line, getting enough water is one of the best habits you can have for overall mental and physical health!
Try something new over the next few weeks, stop and put yourself first. Brainstorm about what you like to do that will bring peace of mind and create your own list of self-care habits. The main goal is to protect and safeguard your own well-being. It’s as simple as treating yourself and that my friend is a move in the right direction! Selfcare is not an action given on a special occasion, it’s a way of life that will allow you to generate moments of bliss and tranquility. We all have different wants and needs, the only person that can decide what self-care practices are best for you is YOU!
